Mandy Boss
My journey into art was not immediate, but it has been deliberate.
Early academic choices did not suggest a future in visual practice. Art was initially a required subject rather than a defined ambition. However, during my later school years, a shift in teaching introduced a more rigorous and analytical approach to image-making. I began to understand art not as an instinctive gift, but as a discipline grounded in observation, structure, and sustained refinement.
Continuing to A Level, my work developed through acrylic painting and expressive colour studies. I was particularly drawn to the emotive force of Franz Marc and the architectural compositional logic of Paul Cézanne. Their influence instilled a respect for underlying structure - an awareness that form must be constructed, not merely suggested.
After periods away from formal practice, I returned in 2009 with a clearer artistic direction. Pencil portraiture offered a medium aligned with precision and restraint. Working in graphite allows for a measured exploration of tonal gradation, surface, and anatomical structure. My focus settled on realism - not as replication, but as a disciplined study of light, proportion, and psychological presence.
A later portrait commission reaffirmed the significance of this direction. Since then, my practice has centered on highly resolved pencil works that prioritise tonal integrity, compositional balance, and quiet intensity that reveals itself through close observation.
My practice is also shaped by a significant visual impairment. Working with conditions including retinitis pigmentosa and ocular albinism, my approach to drawing is necessarily deliberate and highly controlled. This has reinforced a method of sustained observation and careful construction, where accuracy is achieved through process rather than immediacy.
Artistic Direction
Current areas of development include:
● Extending coloured pencil techniques to achieve greater chromatic depth and tonal range
● Developing a more substantial body of animal portraiture, with particular attention to structure and anatomical accuracy
My work continues to evolve through sustained observation and technical refinement. Each piece contributes to a deeper understanding of light, structure, and the individual character that defines a compelling portrait.
The intention is always to create work that reveals both detail and character through close observation.
